AlaHA Names 3 from UAB as 2010 HospitalThree of the 10 Alabama Hospital Association's 2010 Hospital Heroes are staff members at UAB Hospital. They are University Emergency Department Nurse Manager India Alford, RN, BSN; Hearing and Speech Clinical Coordinator Jamie Wade, MS, SLP-CCC; and Family Support Coordinator Wendy Walters, LCSW, OSW-C. UAB will celebrate the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center during 'UAB Loves ASC Week' February 8 through 13. UAB's Alys Stephens Center is the crown jewel of the UAB campus, presenting fun, fabulous shows by the world's best artists and offering arts education for all ages. The week will include ticket giveaways, discounts for the UAB family, and fun, diverse events and performances. The celebration weekend includes performances by Three Dog Night on Friday, February 12, the ASC Kids' Club Black History Month presentation 'Extraordinary Americans Who Happen to Be...,' and the Soweto Gospel Choir, both on Saturday, February 13. Employee Open House for Women & Infants Center January 25 and 26
UAB employees are invited to an open house for the new state-of-the-art Women & Infants Center, Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center, and Jim Limbaugh Family Park of Hope Honoring Phyllis Limbaugh. The events are hosted by UAB Health System CEO William Ferniany, PhD, and UAB Hospital CEO Michael Waldrum, MD. To accommodate all shifts there will be two employee open house events, Monday, January 25, 4 pm to 8 pm, and Tuesday, January 26, 7 am to 10 am. Light refreshments will be served. Schwartz Rounds on Friday, January 22
A new season of Schwartz Rounds is beginning along with the New Year. 2010 will bring some changes to the format of the rounds, which will focus less on the details of each case and more on the commonalities of situations experienced by all caregivers. The goal of the rounds is to look continuously for ways to grow compassion for the roles that each of us fill and create a greater appreciation for the unique challenges every hospital service and unit encounter daily. Join us on Friday, January 22, at Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium at 11 am. Lunch will be served. The rounds conclude at 12:15 pm. Please arrive on time and plan to stay for the entire program.
UABHS Physician Health Officer Sandra Frazier, MD, will conduct an enrichment workshop for physicians seeking self-improvement and insight into problematic behaviors. The 5-day workshop is February 1 through 4 at the Pittman Center for Advanced Medical Studies. Attendees earn 28.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits'. How can physicians incorporate into their clinical practice the cancer prevention and control messages and interventions that target Latino immigrants? A top national expert in Latino cancer issues, Amelie Ramirez, DrPH, MPH, will be in Birmingham February 4 to help lead a satellite conference and live Webcast addressing these issues. Smokey Robinson to Headline ASC GalaKing of Motown Smokey Robinson will be the spotlight performer at the Alys Stephens Center Viva Health Starlight Gala, Saturday, April 24.
